If there is a complaint to be made about “Aferim!,” it is in the fact that Jude has elected not to give viewers any sort of explanation regarding this key period of Romanian history before dropping them into the narrative (there is only a title card reading “Wallachia 1835”). Aferim! amounts to a serious endeavor designed to explore many facets of its era through the lens of people trapped in it. Their crude dialogue, real as it may be, hints at comedic possibilities while offering a shrewd look at people defined by their circumstances. This is a superb film, with a very subtle, coherent presentation. One of the best films of the Romanian "new wave" and that says a lot (look also for Child's Pose, 12:08 East of Bucharest, or Nemescu's California Dreamin').
